student version of H.W. Longfellow’s poem "Excelsior", attributed to DG Knight (lyrics) and AE Blackmar (music). I'll check that when I've found what I've done with my grandmother's ~100 year old music book. Until then, I'll do the same.
When she taught me the song, I remember she said the verses should be sung like "a genteel parlour song", but the chorus was a race or even an all-out war where the first one to the finish line was the only winner.
Incidentally she pronounced it "You-pie-dee You-pie-dah"
